Alpacas produce one of the finest fleeces in the world. Their fiber is as soft as cashmere and warmer and stronger than wool. It comes in more natural colors than any other animal fiber on earth; 22 colors that have recently been consolidated to 16 for marketing purposes.

The blanket is the softest area and generally represents over 60% of the total fleece. Neck fiber is also very good but usually shorter in length than blanket. Middle leg is normally coarser than blanket.

At Big Sky we shear all of our alpacas during the month of May. We blow the fleece with a special blower prior to shearing in order to eliminate dust and any foreign matter. This procedure makes our fleeces very popular with local spinners.
